What we do
Cairns Street Chaplains provide a Good Samaritan service for alcohol or drug intoxicated and other vulnerable people in the Safe Night Precinct of Cairns every Friday and Saturday night. We are on the streets from 10.30pm to 4am offering both Rest and Recovery and Assertive Outreach support.
Our Rest and Recovery Point is at a van located on the corner of Grafton and Shields Streets. From here clients are rehydrated with cups of water, receive basic first aid, have a safe place to rest and chat for a while. They can recharge their phones or be referred on to other service providers, or into the care of a sober friend or family member.
Assertive Outreach is undertaken on foot as we patrol the streets in the Safe Night Precinct of Cairns actively looking for those in need of assistance, and offering basic first aid, help to get clients home safely by calling a sober friend or family member, walking clients to accommodation, taxis or buses, giving directions, having a chat and by referring on to other service providers including the Rest and Recovery Point.
We’re part of a team in the city working with police, paramedics, taxi rank marshals, nightclub venue security, Cairns Regional Council employed security and the CitySafe CCTV Camera Room to keep the night club precinct of Cairns safe.
